Year 2 have been learning all about the Great Fire of London. Take a look at their amazing work from the past 8 weeks. They even got to be bakers like Thomas Farriner!

This week has been anti-bullying week. The theme for this year is REACH OUT. We had a whole school assembly to discuss the key questions:
What is bullying?
Who can I talk to?
What can I say to a bully?
In our classes we have created REACH OUT hands to show who we can reach out to if we or someone that we know is being bullied.

Viking Gary
Today, the children were amazed to discover that they had a visit from a real-life Viking!
Viking Gary had set out a display of all his Viking artefacts and collectables. During the morning session, we learnt about how Vikings lived, where they came from and why they travelled to England, what they believed in, how they made many of their tools and how they fought!
After lunchtime, the children had four different tasks to do! The first one was to study the ancient artefacts and answer questions about them. The second activity was to create a Viking oil lamp out of clay. The third, we created and played a Viking board game and lastly, we learnt how to fight like a Viking! (As you can see from our pictures!)

In Reward Time today ... Year 3 completed a STEM Challenge.
They worked in small teams. Each team had 10 strands of spaghetti and 8 marshmallows.
Their challenge was: Which team could build the tallest tower?
The winners were: Walid, Rihanna and Edina - great teamwork.

This was our last Forest School session of the autumn term. Mr Brooks will be back in January.
This week the nursery childtren listened to the story 'Stickman' . Then they explored the forest and found sticks to make stick man. It was lots of fun.
The reception children lhad a fire and made their own Iron Age flatbread. It was very yummy.

This week at Forest School the Nursery children went on a Bear Hunt. The children re-enacted the story with help from Mr Brooks. Then they found sticks in the forest to make a house for the bear. After they had made the houses the children found a chocolate bear which they couldn't wait to eat.
The Reception children had great fun playing in the leaves. They also learned how to tie a knot and made a friendship bracelet.

This half term, some children in Y3 have been using different texts about rocks and fossils and forces and magnets in Reading lessons. They have been developing fluency and using their 'evidence finding pens' to help them to find answers to comprehension questions in the texts they have been reading.
Here they are performing 'Forces of Nature' - a poem all about the force of a storm - they have learned about how the poet uses personfication and what effect this has on the reader.
Prehistoric art: Cave paintings

Year 3 have used a variety of art skills this half term when creating their Prehistoric art linked to their Stone Age learning in History:
1) Sketching native British animals
2) Blending using charcoal
3) Mixing own paints using flour, water and spices to create a 'Prehistoric pallette'
4) Using different natural resources (lentils, cous cous, bulgar wheat) to create a textured 'cave' background
5) Using original sketches to create an animal 'cave painting'
5) Using different brushes and paints to outline and colour animal image
How and Why some people serve God?

Year 3 had a special visitor today - Rev Chris Stafford came to visit us so the children could consolidate their understanding of our learning question : How and Why some people serve God?
First of all, Rev Chris explained all about the clothes he wears:-
* His cassock is black - which represents Christians believing that Jesus died on Good Friday.
* His robes are white - which represents Easter.
* His stoles (like a scarf) are all different colours to represent different parts of the Christian calendar.
* His green stole is worn most of the time.
* The purple stole represents Advent and Lent.
* The pictures on the white stole represent The Easter Story.
* The red stole is worn the least.
He showed the children the special objects that are used in Communion.
He told us that Christians believe that through the cross you travel to God.
Then, we learnt about belonging in God's family and we had a mock baptism.
Finally, Rev Chris answered lots of the children's questions.

In science this week Year 2 explored different materials to find out which one would be the best for making a waterproof coat. They enjoyed using the equipment to carry out a fair test, made sensible predictions and recorded their findings like real scientists!

Year 2 looked at images of roller coaster rides to gain inspiration for their art this week. They used flowing brush strokes to create their paintings.

This week in our Forest School sessions the children played Squirrel Hide and Seek. The children were told a story about the squirrels hiding their nuts in autumn so they don't get hungry as the seasons change. The children then had to go and hide their nuts.
After that they were asked to go and find them. Let's just say we would have had some very hungry squirrels if this had been real!! It was great fun though.
They learned that squirrels don't always remember where they hide their nut, which is good for the forest as acorns grow into oak trees.

Year 2 created their own plate designs in the syle of Clarice Cliff today. They used different paint brushes to create concentric circles and a tree design. Take a look at their colourful pieces.

During Forest School this week the children explored the forest and were helped to identify the different trees and seeds. The reception children went on a autumn scavenger hunt. The nursery children made their own paint brushes out of sticks and used mud to paint pictures. Great fun was had by all.

The children really enjoyed our autumn walk. They got to experience autumn first hand out in the open. There was even a surprise visitor. Thanks to all the parents that accompanied us and made it possible.

Today, Year 2 sorted through the belongings of King Charles II and Samuel Pepys. They had to decide which person could have had the objects and explained their inferences.

Tongan Rugby Team Visit
Some of our students had the fantastic oppurtunity today to meet some professional Tongan rugby league players. These players will be representing Tonga in the rugby league world cup. Their first match is on Tuesday 18th October so we are very lucky that they have taken time out of their busy schedule to come and visit us.
The children were very excited and got to ask the players lots of questions. At the end of the session, the players signed posters for the children and got photographs taken with them!
We'd like to thank the players once again. The children loved it!

In Year 2 today we played an apostrophe game. We had to read our sentences and decide if the apostrophe had been used for contraction or possession. We had to move to the correct places in our classroom. It was a fun way of showing that we understood how the apostrophe had been used in the sentences.

The first Forest School session was great fun. The children learned about autum and the changes that occur. They explored the forest and looked at the different trees and leaves. They then collected leaves and the nursery children made a leaf mobile and the reception children made a leaf man.

Year 3 have made Stone Age stew today using the ingredients that would have been gathered at that time: berries, honey and nuts. They wrote some fantastic instructions afterwards - thinking about the features of an instruction text they have learned about in English lessons.
