The 20th November was World Children's Day - a day to recognise the importance of the rights of the child. Mrs Jones and our Rights-Respecting Ambassadors led an assembly all about this special day - discussing the difference between wants and needs and how this links to children's rights.

This week has been anti-bullying week. The theme for this year is REACH OUT. We had a whole school assembly to discuss the key questions:
What is bullying?
Who can I talk to?
What can I say to a bully?
In our classes we have created REACH OUT hands to show who we can reach out to if we or someone that we know is being bullied.

Tongan Rugby Team Visit
Some of our students had the fantastic oppurtunity today to meet some professional Tongan rugby league players. These players will be representing Tonga in the rugby league world cup. Their first match is on Tuesday 18th October so we are very lucky that they have taken time out of their busy schedule to come and visit us.
The children were very excited and got to ask the players lots of questions. At the end of the session, the players signed posters for the children and got photographs taken with them!
We'd like to thank the players once again. The children loved it!
Equality and Diversity assembly

Children from our Student Council and Rights-Respecting group dellivered an assembly to KS1 and 2 this week on equality and diversity. They talked to their peers about the Women's Euros and the Commonwealth Games - both being held in the UK this time - and how both competitions are a celebration of inclusion and aiming high to achieve our dreams.

Members of our Student Council, Eco Team and Rights-Respecting Ambassadors presented at the final Governing Body meeting of the year this week to talk about what they have achieved over the past 2 years. They were praised by the Chair of the meeting, Mrs Cottrell!

Members of our Eco Team carried out the final litter pick of the year last week. They also picked lots of blackcurrants off the bushes and used them to make fruit crumbles to take home.
We are very proud of how our fruit trees are looking in the planters this summer and look forward to picking the apples and pears in the autumn.

Members of our Student Council and Rights-Respecting team have met several times over the last couple of weeks to work on a special project: to write a child-friendly version of our Equality Policy. They have thought about the protected characteristics outlined in the Equality Act and created images and examples to teach all age groups across school about inclusion and discrimination. As we are a UNICEF Rights-Respecting school, the pupils have included the relevant rights of the child to the examples in the policy. This will be published to share with stakeholders in September.

SPORTS WEEK 2022
This week has been Lyme's sports week!
During the week, the children were exposed to a few sports that they may not have chance to play outside of school. One of the sports the children played was Ultimate (Ultimate Frisbee). The children loved the fast pace of the game and how they have to work as a team to get the frisbee over the line! Another sport was Orienteering. This sport was the polar opposite to ultimate frisbee. Children had to use maps to navigate around the school grounds and find a number of markers. When they found a marker, they would stamp the special pattern onto their sheet. When all of the markers had been found, the children returned to their teacher. Lastly, KS1 were introduced to Boccia. This is a game similar to bowls. However, it is played sitting down. This game is played in the paralympics at an international level. The children enjoyed the game and loved trying to get their balls as close as they could to the marker.
On Monday, Year 6 played at a football tournament were top goal scorers in the entire tournament. Unfortunately, they were knocked out on penalties in the semi-finals. This doesn't reflect how one-sided the semi-final actually was. Lyme hit the post and bar several times but again, unfortunately, luck wasn't on their side. I would like to congratulate Year 6 on their effort during the tournament and in particularly their behaviour which was fantastic throughout.
On Wednesday, we had a visit from Tara Jones and Katie Mottershead who both play for Saints women's team. Tara is also an England international and is in the squad again to play France tomorrow (on Skysports Arena, 18th June at 5.30pm). Tara and Katie were inspiring and a lot of the children were lucky enough to get their picture taken with the pair.
Lastly, the whole school took part in the race for life today. Each pupil has trained all week to perform this race and they should all be so proud. Every child that completed the race received a medal for their hard work.

KS1 celebrations for the Jubilee

Year 1 and 2 had a fabulous time celebrating the Queen's Platinum Jubilee yesterday! We had a an indoor street party - ate party food, listened to music from different decades and waved our Union Jack flags!
Our Eco Action team have been busy again!

Representatives from our Eco Action team met after school this week to continue with the litter pick they started before the holidays - this included the entrance to Lyme Park too. They will be meeting again next week to weed the planters and to set up a mini greenhouse to grow tomatoes in.

Rights-Respecting Ambassadors - Planning meeting

Our RRS Ambassadors worked very hard in yesterday's meeting - thinking of lots ways in which we are teaching our school community about children's rights and other ideas on how we can improve this further. We are preparing for re-acreditation for the gold level of the award so spent time looking at the criteria for each strand of the application form.
We are proud of the work we have already done, and are continuing to do, that link to children's rights:
*Class Charters
*Assemblies
*Fundraising e.g. Sponsored Read for Ukraine, Comic Relief, Children in Need, cake sale for Oxfam, supporting the local food bank, raising money for our own school - buying new playground equipment to support children's mental health and wellbeing
*Using Picture News/Newsround/ First News - developing ourselves as global citizens
*Our learning in PSHRE and RE
*Our 'Lyme Pupil Passports' - visits and visitors, experience days e.g. our local MP talking to Y3 about his role in the community
Some of our plans for next half term are:
*Teach lessons across the school - focusing on the younger year groups who have not had as much exposure to assemblies/ lessons about them.
*Meet with all the school staff and talk to them about children's rights - spending extra time with new teachers and teaching assistants.
*Plan activities in Arts Week which link to the rights of the child so that we can show how important they are to us.
*Design information leaflets and other resources to tell parents and families about our rights.
*Contact other schools and see if they would like to know more about our work on children's rights.
*Design and make a child-friendly Equality Policy and think about how we can incorporate this into assemblies.
Eco Action Team and 'The Great Big School Clean'

A HUGE thank you to the wonderful Eco Action Team who stayed behind after school last night to discuss our action plan and to take part in the 'Great BIg School Clean'.
Our first job was to discuss our action plan. The projects on there are:
1) To reduce the amount of litter in our school community.
2) To improve how much we reduce/reuse and recycle.
3) To improve our health and wellbeing.
4) To reduce our school's energy bills.
5) To improve the outdoor learning provision.
We agreed that we would work on projects 1 and 5 this next half term. How we will do this:
1) LITTER: Carry out a litter pick around the school grounds tonight and then one in the local area next half term. We will organise a poster competition to encourage everyone to keep our community tidy.
5) SCHOOL GROUNDS: Nurture the trees we planted last year; plant seeds to grow our own fruit and vegetables (strawberries, carrots, potatoes and tomatoes) and use these to make something with. Keep the environment nice for Forest Schools by weeding the planters and picking up litter.. Develop outside art work in Arts Week in the Summer Term.
We started our work on Project 1 tonight - as part of the 'Great Big School Clean', we pledged to collect two bags of litter from around school. We achieved our goal!!

Last month our Student Council decided that they would like to raise money to buy some new equipment for playtimes to improve the activities they are taking part in. On Friday 11th February -to mark Children's Mental Health Week- we held an 'Own Clothes Day' -and raised £170. The student councillors spent some time looking online for resources that they thought they and their classmates would like. Mrs Lammond will organise a rota to make sure that the resources are used properly and fairly.

Today our amazing reading ambassadors supported reading events across the school. Our Year 1 and 2 children visited foundation stage to join in story and library time.
Our Y3, 4 and 5 children supported events in Key Stage 1 and lower key stage 2.
Our Y6 children helped to set up the story spoon competition and delivered the certificates and prizes to the classes.

Wow! What an amazing response we had to our story spoon competition. Here are some photos of the fabulous entries. Thank you to everyone who took part. The children enjoyed looking at all of the wonderful creations and talking about the stories that the characters were from.

This week has been Children's Mental Health Week. We took part in a virtual assembly PLace2Be virtual assembly and thought about who in our lives are in our support bubble - we drew them in balloons.
Today has been Own Clothes Day - the money raising will go to buying new playground equipment. This was an idea from the Student Council who think this will support children's mental health.

This Tuesday, the 8th of February, was Safer Internet Day. Our Y5 Rights-Respecting Schools and Online Safety Ambassadors delivered two assemblies- one to KS1 and one to KS2.
KS1 listened to a story all about Digiduck who needed advice on how to stay safe online. The children gave him advice:
- We should NEVER share passwords with anyone (unless they are a trusted adult).
- We should talk to a trusted adult before we click on things online - Digiduck had to pay for lots of things that he thought we free.
- We should ALWAYS be kind online.
- We should ALWAYS tell a trusted adult if something makes us feel uncomfortable.
KS2 talked about the devices they use and the kinds of games and apps they play on. The main theme of their assembly was being respecful online.
We agreed that we should treat people online the same as we are expected to treat them offline - with respect. We should not feel pressured into doing things that we know are not right or that make us feel uncomfortable and if we are unsure we should ALWAYS talk to a trusted adult.

Year 5 Football Tournament
Today, year 5 and two pupils from year 4 participated in a football tournament. The children were respectful, showed good sportsmanship, manners and displayed plenty of footballing talent. After only losing one match in the group stages, we progressed to the semi-finals. We won the semi-final match after a fantastic goal from Nathan. Unfortunately, the final didn't go the same way and the children finished in second place! However, the children should be so proud of themselves after a fantastic effort all afternoon.
Coming second out of sixteen other schools is something to be extremely proud of!

This week we had a special assembly to celebrate reading. Each class has decorated their door to showcase their class novel and author for this half term. We have now set up a Reading Council and two ambassadors have been chosen as representatives for each class. On Thursday we had our first meeting and came up with lots of exciting reading events that we would like to do over the coming months.
Evie and Rosie in Key Stage 1 were excited to take home our TRENDING BOOK today - 'The Dragon with the Blazing Bottom' by Tom Fletcher.
We can't wait to get dressed up for World Book Day that we will be celebrating on Friday 4th March.

The Eco Action Team have been very busy over the past few weeks. Along with Mr Brooks, they have built some planters using old pallets and filled them wirth compost and bulbs ready for the Spring. The crocus bulbs were given to school by the Rotary Club as part of their campaign to eradicate polio across the world.
The original planters were very overgrown and were in need to of a tidy up - they have weeded them ready for the Spring.
They have also carried out a litter pick on the field - especially after all the windy weather we have had recently.

Year 1 enjoyed their Sports Day today! They took part in lots of different activities - the relay, egg and spoon and sack races; nerf throwing; long jumping and bean bag target games. There was lots of team spirit - cheering each other on and helping their team mates get into their sacks! Well done Year 1!

Year 1 have enjoyed a fun-filled week, learning a variety of different art skills and techniques.
We used the work of Beatriz Milhazes as a stimulus, using circle shapes to create an abstract composition in pairs.
Then we explored different kinds of lines - wavy, vertical, horizontal and cross hatch. Using the work of Bridget Riley, we created our own line composition on black card using chalks - piecing them together as a class composition.
In our next lesson we used our line drawing skills to create a collaborative piece of art with an underwater theme, inspired by the work of David Hockney and Vija Celmins. We experimented with a variety of materials - chalks, oil pastel, cryaons, coloured pencils and felt tip pens.
At the end of the week, we did a colour mixing investigation - making primary and secondary colours using play dough and paint. Using our knowledge of colour, we then created some art work based on a study of the artist Jasper Johns.
We have some very talented artists in our Year 1 class and have been impressed at how well they have all worked together to make their compositions!
