Mrs McDermott
Welcome to Reception
We are a class of four and five-year-olds - our teacher is Mrs McDermott and our Teaching Assistants are Mrs Necula and Vikki.
We do PE on a Monday and a Wednesday. We must wear our school PE kit on those days (a white t-shirt, red shorts/black joggers/leggings, our school jumper/cardigan and black pumps/trainers).
Reading books will be sent home on a Friday and should be returned the following THURSDAY. Children will also choose a library book to enjoy at home.
Throughout the year we will be learning lots of new things, such as how to become independent learners, how to develop and build up persistence, how to work together as a team, how to read and write confidently and to understand and work with numbers up to at least 20.
In our FS unit, Nursery and Reception children learn and play together sharing our well-resourced indoor and outdoor areas. The caring and experienced team aim to inspire awe and wonder in our children.
Throughout the year we will add photos to this page to showcase our learning!

Early Years Foundation Stage
In EYFS at Lyme Community Primary School, we value the importance of promoting a love of reading. We aim to expose the children to a range of high-quality books to inspire their learning. At Lyme, we put the individual child at the centre of everything we do. We understand that play based learning is the key to successful, happy, confident and resilient learners of the future. We believe that the right balance of adult directed and uninterrupted child-initiated play ensures the best outcomes for pupils. The teachers and teaching assistants will support and develop your child in their learning, focussing upon your child's needs and interests. Play is a child's work, and we make no distinction between the two, therefore you will probably hear from your child that they play all day, however, this is where the learning takes place.
To maximise learning opportunities, the children have daily access to both an indoor and outdoor classroom. We have many different areas and activities always available which include (but are not limited to):
- role play
- blocks and construction
- arts and crafts, including painting, drawing, junk modelling
- playdough
- small world
- sand
- water
- music
- movement
- ICT and technology
- a mud kitchen
- gardening
- climbing
- cooking (upon request)
Reading, writing and mathematics are seen frequently across all areas and activities.
