A great big thank you to our Y1 class today who helped Mrs. Roberts by doing a litter pick and some weeding of the planters on the school field - we have some very keen gardeners!

Today Y1 used their cutting and slicing skills to make their own rainbow fruit kebab. Y1 firstly learned about the importance of washing our hands properly before preparing food then followed their own previously made recipe, trying to make their kebabs, interesting, patterned and use a variety of newly tried fruit from around the world. We had kiwis from China, grapes from Spain, pineapple from Hawaii, plus watermelons, oranges and bananas. Super tasting Y1.

Today in Y1, children learnt how to use a knife to prepare their own snack and observe the differences and similarities of flesh from a fruit. Y1 developed their fine motor control to cut, slice, peel and chop a variety of fruit. Using a knife is a life skill and is another step towards our fabulous Y1’s independence. Top chopping (and tasting!)

Over the weekend Mrs Roberts, Mrs Jones, Mr Widdowson and Mr Devereux ran the Manchester 10K, raising a whooping £700 (plus more with gift aid!) for charity. They all did fantastic and we are all so proud of them al Lyme. We also know some of our parents and friends in the community too part and would like to say a massive Well Done to those as well!

This week year 1 have been learning about plants and the seasons we see them grow. We have looked at some common wild flowers and learned about the parts of plants and their functions. On Thursday Y1 were very lucky to be joined by Scott the park ranger on our summer walk. Scott helped children to identify some deciduous and evergreen trees in our fabulous Lyme Pitts park. Children loved making wild flower bracelets and roaming without the constraints of the classroom. As a thank you Y1 helped Scott to clean up the picnic area from any rubbish left behind by messy visitors. Sensational summer walk Y1.

We were very lucky to take part in a rugby workshop led by James Roby and the other Saints players. We even got to meet Boots the mascot!

Y1 were tasked today with helping an aquarium to get ready for their opening day. Mr. Devereux had lots of fish and children had to try and put them into equal groups in our fish tanks. Children found lots of ways to share out our fish and even negotiated with other tables when they found an uneven school of fish. Perfect problem solving Y1.
Exteriors, interiors, hinges and sliders. What makes a house?

This week children have been completing their small scale recycled houses, ready for Mr and Mrs Lego to choose a suitable house to live in. Children learned about some key design features that should be included into their house. We learned about the importance of hinges for safety and we looked at examples around our school on gates, doors and windows. We learned about sliders and how we could use them to add privacy to our house by using them for curtains that could be opened and closed. Children then were tasked to make the interior of their house more appealing by adding furniture, wallpaper and carpets. It’s going to be a very difficult decision for Mr and Mrs Lego. Next we will be evaluating our houses and thinking about what we could do different next time. Well done Y1!
Rights-Respecting Schools Assembly -article 29

The UNCRC article for this half term is article 29 - 'Education must develop every child's personalities, abilities and talents to the full. It must develop a child's respect for human rights, their parents, other cultures and the environment.' Three members of our Rights-Respecting Steering Group planned and led an assembly on looking after the environment: plastic pollution across the world; reducing/reusing/recycling; looking after our school environment. During the assembly, the children shared some ideas of things they, and the Eco Team, will be doing over this term to help take care of our local environment and also support the wider global campaign.

Following on from World Book Day, some of the Y6 children wrote stories about the adventures of 'Esteban the Great' (Pea Green Crayon) from the story 'The Day the Crayons Came Home'. They shared them with our Reception class on Friday - they listen really well!
The James Roby 'Tag' Rugby festival.

Some Children were selected today to represent Lyme at the James Roby 'Tag' Rugby trophy at Newton Storm RLFC. Team Lyme did us proud scoring lots of tries and making some fantastic tackles. The children then got to meet St.Helens rugby legend James Roby and Saints Mascot Boots. Great team work Lyme!

The children had a fun time exploring angles in Magical Maths club tonight. It was the first time the year 5 children had used protractors and they did very well! The children were challeneged to find the smallest and biggest angle, with a chocolatey prize for the winner.

A Fanatstic time was had by all when year 5 went back in time to meet the Saxons at Tatton Park. The children looked superb dressed in their Saxon outfits (A big thanks to all the parents for their help with this!) They took part in many activities including weaving, bread making and learning how to use shields when in battle. We learnt so much and have brought back lots of interesting facts to use in our Saxon assembly later this half term,

Today Y1 met Mr and Mrs Brick, our new Lego family. Holly and Mark Brick are in need of a good, solid, suitable home. Y1, using their knowledge of homes around the world are working hard to give Mr and Mrs Brick a lovely choice of forever homes to choose from. Today Y1 looked at the ways house exteriors are made. We looked at a real house being built in time lapse and we discussed the many ways in which we can join material together. Being as responsible as we can, we used lots of recycled material from Easter and began to make strong exteriors for our houses. Next we will be making our interior and looking at how we can add hinges and flaps to make our rooms and windows accessible for Mr and Mrs Brick. Cool construction Y1.
Rights-Respecting Steeering Group's assembly: article 29

Following our meeting on Friday, members of the RRS Steering Group have delivered an assembly today on article 29 - 'Every child has the right to an education that develops thier abilities and talents. Education should teach them how to look after the environment'.
They have focused on educating their peers on looking after the environment:
*Plastic pollution
*Taking care of the environment
*Litter
*Walk to School Week
Would you rather live in the Med?

To begin our Learning Challenge this term 'Would you rather live in the Med?' the children in Year 3 took part in a Mediterranean food tasting. We tasted food from Italy, France, Greece and Spain. The children enjoyed the afternoon and some children found new foods that they like.

We went outside to look for the Easter Bunny. When we got back to class he had sneaked in and left us some sweet treats. We were very excited. 🐰🐰

To finish our Lowry inspired learning challenge, children learned about life for L.S. Lowry during his time in primary school. Children learned about the differences and similarities between schools in Victorian times and schools today, from equipment, rules and conditions to understanding that boys and girls would of been taught different things. Although Y1 enjoyed their time in a Victorian classroom they were all very glad to step back into our modern classroom, and thankfully there was no need for any caning. Great learning Y1.

RRS visit to Sherdley Primary School

After the success of their presentation at the Junior Democracy Debate at the Town Hall last term, our Rights-Respecting Steering Group were invited to Sherdley Primary School in Sutton to lead an assembly. Sherdley Primary School are on their way to achieving the Silver accreditation of the RRSA and wanted our ambassadors to share what they have learned and what we have done at Lyme to embed the rights of the child into our school ethos. The four members of our RR Steering Group who lead the assembly did so with confidence and enthusiasm - yet again being excellent representatives for Lyme and outstanding amabassadors for children's rights.

On Thursday, our hard working Eco-Team spent the afternoon digging over the planters on the school field and planting sunflowers, beans and sowing wildflower seeds with the help of Scott, Lyme Park's Ranger.
Then they had the hard job of choosing the winning native animal drawing from each class. From the class winners, Scott will choose an overall design to include on signs in Lyme Park. Watch this space for the winning art work!

Yesterday, the winners of the eco competition were announced in assembly. Scott, Lyme Park's Ranger, came to present the children who had drawn the winning entries with certificates and prizes. He will use the overall winning drawing as the centre-piece for the signs, with the others featured on there too.
The Eco Team were also given certificates to thank them for all their hard work.

A HUGE thank you to our Student Council who organised some Easter activities during 'Friday fun-time' this week to raise money for School Fund: added to the money raised during the Easter Bingo and class raffles, over £700 was made!
Easter egg decorating competition

Our Rights Respecting Schools Ambassadors had a difficult job judging this year's Easter egg decorating competition on Friday. We were all amazed by the effort the children had put in to demonstrate one of the articles from the UN rights of the child.
Take a look at the entries; the finalists and the top 3...they really were all eggcellent!
