Today, Year 1 have been creating their own snail sculptures.
First of all, we looked at images of different snails – then, we discussed the patterns on their shells. We used our sketching skills to create our own design – using lines, curls and circles.
After that, we used moulding clay to create our snail sculpture – using etching tools to create a pattern.
It was fun!

This week has been Arts Week in school.
In Year 1, we have been studying landscapes – by a range of artists including Van Gogh’s ‘Fishing Boats on the Beach’. Then we have created our own beach landscapes – using a variety skills including:-
* Sketching
* Collaging
* Painting with watercolours
* Colour mixing – with black and white – to make darker or lighter tones.
We know that you have to create a horizon line when creating a landscape picture.
Year 1 worked hard on their art activities this week and they have created some great masterpieces.
Well done Year 1!

Sports Week 2022 - RACE FOR LIFE!
Date: 17th Jun 2022 @ 3:51pm
SPORTS WEEK 2022
This week has been Lyme's sports week!
During the week, the children were exposed to a few sports that they may not have chance to play outside of school. One of the sports the children played was Ultimate (Ultimate Frisbee). The children loved the fast pace of the game and how they have to work as a team to get the frisbee over the line! Another sport was Orienteering. This sport was the polar opposite to ultimate frisbee. Children had to use maps to navigate around the school grounds and find a number of markers. When they found a marker, they would stamp the special pattern onto their sheet. When all of the markers had been found, the children returned to their teacher. Lastly, KS1 were introduced to Boccia. This is a game similar to bowls. However, it is played sitting down. This game is played in the paralympics at an international level. The children enjoyed the game and loved trying to get their balls as close as they could to the marker.
On Monday, Year 6 played at a football tournament were top goal scorers in the entire tournament. Unfortunately, they were knocked out on penalties in the semi-finals. This doesn't reflect how one-sided the semi-final actually was. Lyme hit the post and bar several times but again, unfortunately, luck wasn't on their side. I would like to congratulate Year 6 on their effort during the tournament and in particularly their behaviour which was fantastic throughout.
On Wednesday, we had a visit from Tara Jones and Katie Mottershead who both play for Saints women's team. Tara is also an England international and is in the squad again to play France tomorrow (on Skysports Arena, 18th June at 5.30pm). Tara and Katie were inspiring and a lot of the children were lucky enough to get their picture taken with the pair.
Lastly, the whole school took part in the race for life today. Each pupil has trained all week to perform this race and they should all be so proud. Every child that completed the race received a medal for their hard work.
Congratulations to everyone on a fantastic sport's week. We hope you enjoyed it!
Date: 17th Jun 2022 @ 12:37pm
As part of Sports Week Y1 participated in their Race for Life this morning - it was fun - even in the heat!

Making windmills for Mr. Mouse
Date: 23rd May 2022 @ 4:25pm
This half term, Y1 have made windmills for their client, Mr. Mouse. They had to follow his design criteria: it must be stable, it must have windows and a door, it should be decorated in the colours he likes and have tulips on (he is from Holland!). The children know that their windmill is made of a structure and has an axle to turn the turbine (sails) - they did such a good job! After they had finished they evaluated their finished products.
Date: 23rd May 2022 @ 4:20pm
Three of our local PSCOs visited Y1 today to talk about this half term's PSHRE learning question: 'Who helps us to keep safe?'
They talked about their role in the community and how they help to keep people safe; how to call '999' and who to ask for and how to stay safe when using technology. After that they answered any other questions that the children had.
Date: 11th May 2022 @ 8:28am
Year 1 have been learning all about life in the 1970s.
We have watched a learning clip about the toys that were popular in the 1970s.
Then, we explored some of the toys from the 1970s including: Hungry Hippos Game, Connect Four, Lite Brite, Rubix Cube and Boggle.
It was fun - lots of Y1 enjoyed the Hungry Hippos Game but some children liked the challenge of Boggle and the Rubix Cube.

Year 1 have been learning all about life in the 1970s.
As part of our learning, we have listened to some pop songs by Abba (Dancing Queen) and The Bee Gees (Stayin Alive).
Then we talked about the disco beats, pulses and catchy choruses in the music. We practised our singing skills by learning some of the choruses.
After that we improvised some of the disco dance moves.
It was fun!
Our Eco Action team have been busy again!
Date: 28th Apr 2022 @ 12:19pm
Representatives from our Eco Action team met after school this week to continue with the litter pick they started before the holidays - this included the entrance to Lyme Park too. They will be meeting again next week to weed the planters and to set up a mini greenhouse to grow tomatoes in.
Have a look at the photos of our beautiful planters - the fruit trees we planted last year are doing well and are covered in blossom!
Baby Zorg's mission to go home
Date: 28th Mar 2022 @ 3:40pm
Year 1 have been looking after Baby Zorg for a number of weeks now after his spaceship crash landed on the school field - by the car park.
Year 1 decided that they needed to learn all about The United Kingdom and Our Local Area before they could send a message to his parents.
The remembered the following key information:-
* Planet Earth
* The United Kingdom
* England
* London is the capital city of England
* Liverpool is a city near where they live
* St Helens is the town where they live
* Earlestown is an area of St Helens
* Lyme Community Primary School is in Lyme Street
* Sam's Shop is on the corner of Lyme Street and the Country Park is next to school
Y1 have left Baby Zorg in the office as they think he is missing his parents - they know all this key information will help his parents find him.
Date: 28th Mar 2022 @ 3:29pm
As a treat to end the term, Y1 participated in the inflatable fun session in KABs this morning.
All the children had a fun time.
Date: 17th Mar 2022 @ 4:23pm
Today, Y1 have made smoothies! They worked in groups to peel and slice their chosen fruits and vegetables - using the bridge hold to keep the food steady while they cut it. Then they used a blender to combine the flavours. We then tasted them and evaluated the product.
Smoothie ingredient taste testing
Date: 10th Mar 2022 @ 4:56pm
We have had a very exciting afternoon in Y1! First we had to guess the ingredients of the shop-bought smoothies by using sight, smell and taste - we made some very good guesses! The green one made us think it had brocolli or peas in it but we were glad to find out that it was kiwi fruit and cucumber that gave it its colour! Next we listened to a song about why we should 'eat 5-a-day' - we talked about how drinking a smoothie could help us with this. After that we did a taste test of some different smoothie ingredients and decided which kind of smoothie we would like to make in our next lesson and why. Mrs. Roberts was very proud of how we all had a try of a variety of different things- even if we were unsure or hadn't tasted them before.
Date: 4th Mar 2022 @ 5:06pm
Year 1 have had a fabulous fun-filled day - for Word Book Day we all dressed as a Super Hero or a Super Villian.
In class, we wrote sentences about the Super Hero in our story 'Super Daisy'.
We also completed 'Super Hero Maths', made our own Super Hero Cities, made masks, designed capes for Super Heroes.
Some of us used contstruction toys to create Super Hero Cities or Super Hero Vehicles.
We shared story books with each other and the Reading Ambassadors from Y3 visited our class too.
We finsihed the day by singing some of the songs from 'A Pocketful of Songs' by Julia Donaldson.
Date: 4th Mar 2022 @ 1:45pm
Today our amazing reading ambassadors supported reading events across the school. Our Year 1 and 2 children visited foundation stage to join in story and library time.
Our Y3, 4 and 5 children supported events in Key Stage 1 and lower key stage 2.
Our Y6 children helped to set up the story spoon competition and delivered the certificates and prizes to the classes.
Date: 4th Mar 2022 @ 1:30pm
Wow! What an amazing response we had to our story spoon competition. Here are some photos of the fabulous entries. Thank you to everyone who took part. The children enjoyed looking at all of the wonderful creations and talking about the stories that the characters were from.
The names of the winners will be on our newsletter.
Well done everyone!
Lyme Country Park - Science Learning Walk
Date: 2nd Mar 2022 @ 12:41pm
This morning, Year 1 have been on a Science Learning Walk - even though it was slightly wet and very muddy in places a great time was had by everyone.
We learnt some of the names of the plants in the country park - such as:-
* Scots Pine
* Hawthorne
* Gorse
* Pussy Willow
We also talked about some of the signs of 'Spring' - like the plants turning from brown and orange colours to light green. Also, when the natural water and puddles start to reduce this is also a sign that Spring is coming.
We listened to some of the birds tweeting and singing to each other - we even saw a robin.
Before we returned to school, we stopped by one of water features in the park and saw a cormorant - it feeds on fish and frogs.
It was a very long walk (just over 2 miles) and we climbed some big hills - including Skylark Hill (although Scott The Ranger told us he calls it Scott's Hill). We could see a long way from the top of the hill - we saw parts of Haydock and Earlestown Town Hall.
It was great fun!
Date: 28th Feb 2022 @ 12:57pm
As this week is World Book Day ... Year 1 participated in an online learning session with Julia Donaldson.
Julia told Y1 all about her new book 'A Pocketful of Songs'. They also joined in with some singing - The Highway Rat and Superworm were some of their favourites.
It was a fun activity.
Date: 25th Feb 2022 @ 3:49pm
Lesson 1: I can investigate foods and say whether it is a fruit or a vegetable.
This week we looked at different foods and sorted them into groups: fruit and vegetable. We found out that it is a fruit if it has seeds and that we can eat some seeds (like on strawberries) but not others (like in mangoes).
Finally, we did a taste test – using adjectives to describe the taste and textures.
